There are a variety of styles to choose from, which you can use to illustrate many different types of ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To insert a SmartArt graphic:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place the insertion point in the document where you want the SmartArt graphic to appear.<\/li><li>From the&nbsp;<strong>Insert<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, select the&nbsp;<strong>SmartArt<\/strong>&nbsp;command in the&nbsp;<strong>Illustrations<\/strong>&nbsp;group.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gcflearnfree.org\/ctassets\/topics\/233\/smart_insert_command.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Word 2013\" width=\"357\" height=\"121\"><\/li><li>A dialog box will appear. A new bullet will appear in the task pane, and a new shape will appear in the graphic. This works well if you only need to add text to a&nbsp;<strong>few shapes<\/strong>. However, for more complex SmartArt graphics, working in the&nbsp;<strong>task pane<\/strong>&nbsp;is often faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing the SmartArt organization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To add a shape:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Select the SmartArt graphic, then click the&nbsp;<strong>Design<\/strong>&nbsp;tab on the right side of the Ribbon.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gcflearnfree.org\/ctassets\/topics\/233\/smart_add_ribbon.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Word 2013\" width=\"624\" height=\"119\"><\/li><li>Decide where you want the&nbsp;<strong>new shape<\/strong>&nbsp;to appear, and select an&nbsp;<strong>adjacent<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>shape<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gcflearnfree.org\/ctassets\/topics\/233\/smart_add_select_shape.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Word 2013\" width=\"668\" height=\"287\"><\/li><li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Add Shape<\/strong>&nbsp;command in the&nbsp;<strong>Graphics<\/strong>&nbsp;group. A drop-down menu will appear.<\/li><li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Add Shape Before<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Add Shape After&nbsp;<\/strong>to add a shape on the same level as the selected shape. With the&nbsp;<strong>insertion point<\/strong>&nbsp;in the task pane, press the&nbsp;<strong>Tab<\/strong>&nbsp;key to demote a shape. Press the&nbsp;<strong>Backspace<\/strong>&nbsp;key (or&nbsp;<strong>Shift+Tab<\/strong>) to promote a shape. It&#8217;s a lot like creating an outline with a&nbsp;<strong>multilevel list<\/strong>. Whenever you select a SmartArt graphic, the&nbsp;<strong>Design<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>&nbsp;tabs will appear on the right side of the Ribbon. From there, it&#8217;s easy to edit the&nbsp;<strong>style&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>layout&nbsp;<\/strong>of a SmartArt graphic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To customize SmartArt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Word provides a variety of&nbsp;<strong>color schemes<\/strong>&nbsp;to use with SmartArt. To change the colors, simply select the SmartArt, click the&nbsp;<strong>Change Colors<\/strong>&nbsp;command, and choose the desired colors from the drop-down menu.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gcflearnfree.org\/ctassets\/topics\/233\/smart_custom_color.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Word 2013\" width=\"615\" height=\"361\"><\/li><li>Color schemes use&nbsp;<strong>Theme Colors<\/strong>, so they will vary depending on which&nbsp;<strong>Theme<\/strong>&nbsp;you are using. To change the style, select the&nbsp;<strong>desired style&nbsp;<\/strong>from the<strong>&nbsp;SmartArt styles&nbsp;<\/strong>group.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gcflearnfree.org\/ctassets\/topics\/233\/smart_custom_style2.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Excel 2013\" width=\"604\" height=\"326\"><\/li><li>You can add&nbsp;<strong>shape<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>effects<\/strong>&nbsp;to your SmartArt, such as&nbsp;<strong>beveling<\/strong>&nbsp;and<strong>&nbsp;3D rotation<\/strong>. Select the entire SmartArt graphic by clicking the border, selecting the&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, then choosing the desired&nbsp;<strong>Shape Effects<\/strong>.
